POP SIDES
VOICE IN THE DISTANCE
Hey Pop! You awake!
NARRATIVE
Boy, the way kids dressed today… but then again
I remembered my father saying those exact word
Fifty years ago. That was back in nineteen seventy
or seventy one.
GRANDSON
Pop! Can I bum a smoke off you?
Your Mom has been bugging me to quit since she was
Kid. Help yourself, but don’t let her see. She’ll know
Right where it came from. She’ll be on me like flies on
Shit.
GRANDSON
Yeah, she can be tough when it comes to smoking.
At least you and Aunt Kelly understand.
POP
I understand more than you think, Lee.
NARRATIVE
I knew I had his attention because I never called
Him by his name. I always called him “Boy”.
I know all about the pot. Your Mom was pretty
Upset when she found that baggie in your dresser
Drawer. When she called me she was ready to toss
Your butt into jail. I talked her into bringing you
Back east to visit me instead. Consider yourself
Lucky. When your Mom’s a cop, boy you better
Walk the line.
Have you said goodbye to your Mom yet? She’s
Leaving for the airport in a few minutes.
(apprehensively)
Yeah.
POP
Okay then, get your stuff in the back bedroom
And unpack. The dresser is empty so use it. But
I better not find any “wacky tobacky” in it after
You leave.
